Amphora
Ceramic, steel
Hosted in the In House, GHP Faculty and Staff exhibition by the Jane Hartsook Gallery on September 18th, 2025.
One ceramic amphora measuring at 24 inches (61 cm) tall by 12 inches (31 cm) wide.
This vessel is constructed from both buff and white stoneware and coil-thrown upside down as the primary mode of construction. The surface was decorated using small dabs of clay pinched onto the surface for a scaled texture. It was then bisque fired to 1800 degrees Fahrenheit (~1000 degree Celsius), glazed with a mixture of wood ash, rutile, and Gerstley Borate and high-fired (2400 degrees Fahrenheit/1300 degrees Celsius) in a heavy reduction environment to mimic the effects of a wood firing. The inside is glazed with a high-fire white glaze.
The stand was one of two fabricated by Matt Dawe, the other currently residing with an un-shown pot.
Styled after the previous amphorae I had made this is smaller, but more detailed and better constructed. Putting more emphasis on surface texture and capturing the effects of the of the faux wood firing. This pot is also inherently waterproofed because of its interior glaze finish and vitrified state.
